AI: Revolutionizing the way we live, work, and create

By now, you must have heard the term AI (Artificial Intelligence) or Chat GPT at least once, or you may have already adopted it in your work by the time you read this article. In fact, the concept of AI was introduced back in the 1950s; however, there was a period of setbacks before the flourishing era started again in 2012 with widespread use like the present day.

With advanced technology, we have to accept the benefits of adopting AI as a part of our work. It is hard to believe that we are moving toward an era in which technology can replace human being’s ability to work, not to mention the ability of those machines that are able to think and make decisions as humans do.

So what is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a collection of technologies that provide computers with the capacity to carry out a wide range of sophisticated tasks, such as seeing, comprehending, and translating spoken and written language, analyzing data, making suggestions, and more.

AI doesn’t work as a single technology. AI, which can be referred to as machine intelligence, is a subfield of computer science that focuses on creating and overseeing technology that has the capacity to independently decide what to do and act on behalf of a human. There are types of AI that are achievable and currently possible, such as predictive AI, model-and-detect AI, and generative AI.

  • Predictive AI:  to put it into words, this type of AI forecasts a data point’s expected future state. Recommendation engines, spell checkers, and other AI applications utilizing statistical methods and feature engineering fall under this category. Major developments in AI were heralded by this form. Mobile phone auto-correction, purchasing suggestions, and recommendations for digital ad spending are a few examples.
  • Model and Detect AI: Users can create a model and test it on fresh data if they have an objective function and a sufficiently large dataset. This includes broad search techniques and computer vision. Furthermore, spam detection, facial recognition, and other applications benefit greatly from modeling and detecting AI.
  • Generative AI: This is one of the most well-known and widely used AI in the past few years. In a few seconds, generative AI may write a piece of code, or essay based on a prompt that would be considered accurate enough for a human. They employ transformer models, which may be quickly and reliably used to replace individual tasks or entire sets of tasks across a wide range of digital labor. With tools like Microsoft Bing, Google Bard, and ChatGPT, this is the current major wave of AI.

Grammarly just joined the fray by offering GrammarlyGo as a built-in generative AI tool in addition to their writing helper tool. At the same time, Canva introduces Magic Writing, which is generative AI that is conveniently integrated within the same platform.

AI Context in Cambodia

Some countries in the world have taken advantage of AI; however, in Cambodia, there is still a limitation in terms of data, hardware, and knowledge in utilizing the power of AI. There are sectors that have taken advantage greatly of adopting AI, one of which includes Marketing and Media.

According to research by McKinsey & Company State of AI 2023 Report conducted in the USA  shows the most common business functions that use AI such as:

  • Sales and Marketing
  • Product and service development
  • Service operations (customer care and back-office support)

In Cambodia, based on a report published a May 2023 by The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) on the Artificial Intelligence Landscape in Cambodia: Current Status and Future Trends shows the progress of recognizing the potential of AI along with the plan of AI adoption. The Ministry document under the Digital Economy and Society Policy Framework 2021-2035, stated about need for collaboration for AI adoption in Cambodia between the government and enterprise level, which is a glimpse of what is the next step.

Some Individuals and Private sectors in Cambodia have stepped up their game with AI without hesitation thanks to their need to increase productivity and less complication in adopting new technology into their framework.

Generative AI is on the rise

Most of the time when talking about AI or Machine Learning, most people always think of robots which reflects the lack of catching up with technology. Both individuals and corporations are utilizing generative AI more and more; 60% of firms are employing generative AI, and many businesses anticipate investing more in AI overall as a result of generative AI.

Our Team Experience With Generative AI

At twd. especially, the content and Media department team often provide written documents including proposals, content captions, articles, insight reports, etc. With generative AI, it helps transform the sentence and express our team’s ideas more lively. Here are our team’s opinions after adopting ChatGPT into their work:

Sothy stated that “As a Head of the Media and Content department, I have used ChatGPT to enhance my creativity in researching and crafting content ideas. Furthermore, ChatGPT helps me improve my copywriting and correct grammatical errors. However, the results I receive from ChatGPT are not always accurate and up-to-date, so I need to fact-check with reliable sources and update any outdated data.”

Sivlean added “AI can assist me in generating content ideas. It can provide great headline options. It instantly retrieves data, enabling me to create interesting, accurate content without spending long hours doing research. However, AI doesn’t have human emotions. It cannot empathize with a client’s pain points. It doesn’t know how to connect with individuals. Additionally, a lot of AI content generators use words and phrases that sound unnatural.”

From our team’s experience, people in different parts of the world with access to generative AI have stated that they are experiencing similar things with AI. AI depends heavily on existing data, but with millions of people having access to it, there is going to be exhaustion in the future.

One more case worth mentioning about the constraint with generative AI is the limited variety of languages. ChatGPT and Google Bard can offer to generate the text in up to 50 languages only. So if you are not one of those 50 countries, to be able to take advantage of this, you either need to wait for it to be available in your language or you can learn a new language, such as English, to begin with.

Final Thought

Of course, AI is beneficial for everyone in different ways. Moreover, it is still in an early stage, but the adoption of generative AI has already spread wildly. Will AI replace humans and steal all the work? The answer is no. The same study by McKinsey showed that nearly 40% of the experts and over 20% of their workers should be re-skilled rather than eliminated. Although AI has increased the likely percentage of worker activities that could be automated (from 50% to 60%), this does not necessarily imply the automation of an entire position.

Signing off, enjoy, and increase your productivity with AI in whatever way is possible for you. However, keep in mind the requirement for responsibility, as well as the necessity to verify the accuracy and danger by using various sources of information.
